AIS core sports history
bmx:
the AIS core sports program has its roots in the early 2005 when the first sidewalk skate sessions and demos began to go down on the sidewalk in front of the school. mr.sam and his bmx dirt jumping skills were the focus of winter 2006 and the fun but short-lived AIS mini dirt track was a popular spot to ride.
skate:
the interest of students was further piqued when the filming crew for 'not right!' and their skate team from kona, hawaii rolled up for a couple of weeks of japan skating in the summer of 2006. the brothers james and morrison, along with ben and his posse threw down in many of osaka's best spots and even enjoyed a late-night cruise with the man himself, chopper~san.
skim:
adding to the flavour of board sports were the yearly late spring and summer skimboard sessions beginning in 2006 at nearby ashiya beach. the first crews in the annual tradition included miwa, sam, brian, burke, adrian, cat, and mrd. later on more would join, including some of the AIS students.
projectskates:
the core sports program officially began in late 2007 when project skates provided lumber, design, and labour for the new playground element called "adventure mountain", a sandbox, balance beam, and...a micro mini ramp surfaced with skatelite and stainless steel screws and complete with lights and a sound system. since then many students, staff, summer school students, locals, and guests from international destinations in more than five countries have enjoyed trying their skills on a skateboard and making new friends in the outdoors.
skate kansai:
a beautiful final chapter to the AIS core sports program was the creation of the unofficial "skate kansai" scene involving collaborative skate sessions between various local riders and members of the marist bros. bulldogs skate club and the AIS core sports skate club. some footage of the spring 2010 events has been compiled on the media page. it has been a great adventure...keep skating and have fun!

it is the end of an era... the school has announced their plans to discontinue most of the elementary classes and levels as of next year. this means that most of our eligible skaters are either graduating or seeking other schools. some will go to marist bros. and we hope they join mr. shitamoto and his skate posse there. thank you to all who made skate club a fun and cool place to be...keep skating and have fun!
on a related note, if anyone is interested in purchasing a slightly used but still rockin' mini-ramp, please contact davej at info@projectskates.com for info.
the latest video is up! check out the media page to see some of the fun we had with the skate kansai open house sessions. have a great summer, hope to see you skimming at the beach! |

the first official "skate kansai" was a great success as skaters from marist brothers international school came to skate the mini ramp and meet the AIS core sports skaters...around fifteen skaters, young and old, shredded the mini ramp and the sketchy plywood obstacles while deftly avoiding the hungry gravel below...we had so much fun we plan to do it again, and again! so keep practicing and stay tuned for the next sunday session...a big thanks to mr. shitamoto for organizing his crew and for his inspirationally crazy 360s...see you next week, posse!

skate club members put on their annual easter event demo on saturday with a new twist...this year, non-club members could sign up for drop-in lessons and skate along with them! five new skaters signed up to try the mini-ramp (all of them first-timers!) and many of the club members helped teach and coach their new friends from other schools. we hope they keep practicing and we will skate with them again soon.
*beginner of the year award goes to ken for learning to ride, pump, revert, kick-turn, drop in, and rock fakie (and coach other first-timers) all in under 3 hours on his first day! whoa--look out for this guy, he is unstoppable! |

some of the div2 students instigated the creation of the first unofficial AIS skate video as part of the AIStv assignment for mini term 2010. a few of the younger students chose to skate in a couple of the shots, and the older students each had a part. it was so much fun to film and watch that plans are in the works for another in the spring. get your trick lists and lines ready! |
